Spend valuable time with the pen tool, building your skills while having fun. Master the spiral tool and make it do your bidding. In this class, it’s all achievable - and the swirly, curly, flowing linework will be yours! You'll come away with beautiful finished artwork and essential Illustrator techniques.

This hour-long class will take you through the creation of pen tool curves, curved shapes and spirals, using an included grid template file and step-by-step instruction. With the component shapes and paths created in this stage, we’ll move on to arranging the flourishes into a cohesive design. You'll work at your own pace, exploring the pen tool and spiral tool in depth. You'll learn easy techniques and core skills for joining paths and using the reflect tool. In the final stages we'll apply strokes, fills, included color swatches and styles. You’ll emerge with a finished stationery set, a vinework border and beautiful decorative swirls and frames you can repurpose for your own designs! This self-paced workshop is taught in Adobe Illustrator CS5. The interface, techniques and tools this class employs are virtually the same for versions CS3 through CS6, and any differences will be highlighted. The lesson template files provided include versions CS3, CS4, CS5 and CS6.
The font used in the class projects is Aphrodite Slim Text, and is available on MyFonts.com. There is a direct link to the font on Laura's blog; however, the font is not required for this class.

We’ll be creating the frames and a collection of swirls needed to make this A2 sized stationery set, including a foldover thank you card and note paper.
We’ll also create a beautiful 12” long vinework border that’s perfect for invitations and scrapbook pages. Included in this class is the template file we’ll use for creating the component parts and a layout file for each project that includes guide lines, color swatches and sample art.
